Delhi CM Swearing-in Ceremony Updates: CM Rekha Gupta, 6 ministers take oath as BJP forms govt after 27 years

Six Delhi BJP leaders Parvesh Verma, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, Pankaj Kumar Singh and Ashish Sood took oath as Cabinet minister under the CM Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government.

Parvesh Verma, the MLA from the New Delhi constituency, has taken oath as a minister in the Delhi Cabinet.

First-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh Rekha Gupta has become the new chief minister of Delhi after taking oath at the Ramlila ground.

She is the fourth woman chief minister of Delhi and the only female leader to hold the post among all the other BJP-ruled states.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived at the venue of the oath-taking ceremony. Delhi CM-designate Rekha Gupta will be sworn in shortly at Ramila Maidan.

Rekha Gupta told NDTV that she was not aware of becoming the BJP’s pick for the chief minister’s post when she left her home to attend the legislative meeting of the party on Wednesday.

“When I left home, I did not know that I would become the Chief Minister,” she said, adding that she came to know about it when Parvesh Verma proposed her name for the post.

Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh have arrived at the venue of the oath-taking ceremony. Among other BJP and NDA leaders who are in attendance at the Ramlila Maidan are Nawab Saini, Chandrababu Naidu, Pawan Kalyan, Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, Conrad Sangma, Bhajanlal Sharma, and others.

BJP leader Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi assembly seat, said that the new government will work to make the city the ‘most beautiful capital in the world.’

Verma will take oath alongside Delhi CM-designate Rekha Gupta today.

“After 27 years, BJP is going to form the govt in Delhi today. People of Delhi are confident that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, we will succeed in making Delhi the most beautiful capital of the world,” he said ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.

The suspense over BJP’s new Delhi chief minister is finally over.

On Wednesday, the saffron party announced  Rekha Gupta, a former Delhi University Students’ Union president, as the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi.

The 50-year-old will be sworn in during a grand swearing-in ceremony at the city’s famous Ramlila Maidan today (February 20). It is likely to be attended by around 50,000 attendees, including top BJP leaders and CMs from party-ruled states.

Six ministers will take oath today as Delhi Cabinet ministers after Rekha Gupta is sworn in as the chief minister of the national capital. These are:

• Parvesh Singh Verma: The ‘giant slayer’ of the Delhi Assembly elections who managed to defeat AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, Verma is a prominent Jat face in the national capital. He will likely become the deputy chief minister of Delhi
• Kapil Mishra: The leader who left AAP and won the Karawal Nagar assembly seat on BJP’s ticket in the recently held elections, Mishra will be inducted into the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi Cabinet today
• Manjinder Singh Sirsa: The BJP leader won the Rajouri Garden seat, marking his comeback in the assembly constituency. He had earlier won the seat in 2017 but lost it to AAP in the 2020 assembly polls
• Ashish Sood: A longtime BJP leader, Sood was among the frontrunners for the Delhi chief minister post. The leader won the Janakpuri seat by 18,766 votes in the polls
• Pankaj Kumar Singh: A known face in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Singh has served in important posts in the civic body. In the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP leader made a debut by winning the Vikaspuri seat
• Ravinder Indraj Singh: A popular Dalit face of Delhi BJP, Singh won from the Bawana assembly seat

BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who will take oath as one of Delhi’s Cabinet ministers, said, “I am grateful to the top leadership of the party for giving me the opportunity to be part of the team that will implement PM Modi’s vision… Delhi will get clean water, clean air… We will take action against those who commit corruption and Arvind Kejriwal will have to spend most of his time in jail.”

Delhi Chief Minister-designate Rekha Gupta has assured that the BJP government would fulfill its poll promise on providing Rs 2,500 monthly financial assistance to women.

The first instalment of the monthly support would be credited to their accounts by March 8, Gupta said.

Rekha Gupta has won the Delhi election from the Shalimar Bagh constituency. She started her political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). She has been associated with the Sangh Parivar since 1992. Gupta, 50, was chosen as the Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly at the BJP legislature party meeting on Wednesday evening. Senior BJP leader Ravishankar Prasad, who along with OP Dhankar was appointed as the party’s two central observers, announced her name as the CM-designate on Wednesday.

Gupta, accompanied by Prasad, Dhankar and Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva among others, met Lt Governor VK Saxena and staked claim to form the government. Late in the night, a post of the LG on X said he had accepted the claim by Gupta and invited her to form the new government.

Gupta won from Shalimar Bagh defeating AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes. She is the fourth woman legislator to take oath as the Delhi chief minister after Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Dikshit (Congress) and Atishi (AAP).

The mega oath-taking ceremony will be held at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan where preparations are underway before guests start arriving. Lieutenant Governor LG Saxena will administer oath today to the chief minister-designate Rekha Gupta and her six Cabinet ministers.
