Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Tomar's degree is fake: Congress, BJP demand resignation

The Congress on Tuesday demanded the resignation of AAP MLA and Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar a day after the Delhi High Court was informed that  Tomar’s provisional LLB certificate is “fabricated”and does not exist in the institution’s record. The Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University in Bihar has filed an inquiry report before the court, stating that the serial number of the provisional certificate in the university records showed the name of some other person in a different stream of study and not that of Tomar,   an Indian Express report said. AFP[/caption] Further,  The Times of India quoted the affidavit filed before Justice Rajiv Shakdher as saying, “As per records, the provisional certificate with serial number 3687 was issued on July 29, 1999 to Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary for BA (honours) in political science. The certificate in Jitender Tomar’s name is a fabricated document and does not exist in the university’s records.” The university was responding to the notice issued to it on a plea alleging that Tomar had got himself enrolled as an advocate on the basis of a “false and bogus” graduation degree. The court had also sought a reply from the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University in Uttar Pradesh, from where the law minister said he had graduated in science, reports T_ he Asian Age._ This is the latest in the controversy over the law minister’s qualifications. Meanwhile, the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) informed the high court that it had suspended Tomar’s licence after Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University (UP), where he claimed to have done his BSc from, admitted that Tomar’s graduation degree was “totally fake.” The high court has asked BCD to file its inquiry report against Tomar by 20 August, according to  The Times of India. Even BJP leader and Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi  questioned the decision to appoint Tomar to the law  ministry.

“If it’s the case that the law minister’s degrees are fabricated, then he has no business to be in that position, Delhi government has to answer,” former AAP member and senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan said.

Meanwhile, Tomar has reportedly said he has nothing to hide. Speaking to reporters at a press conference, he said: “The truth will come out once the college documents (attendance register and admission form) appear in court. I will file a counter petition in court.” NDTV in a report quoted Tomar as saying, “A fabricated case based on lies cannot be reason to resign. My degree is 100 per cent genuine, I have all documents to prove it.”
