“I went to Safdarjung Hospital just yesterday. And my daughters face kept coming back to me… how she was lying there eight months back,” her voice trails off, as the December 16 gangrape victim’s mother fumbles for words to describe how her family has spent the last eight months fighting for justice. “Before this happened to my daughter, I had no idea that a human being could do this monstrosity to a girl. How can someone do this to anyone,” she asks, her voice a mix of weariness and indignation, as she probably faces the millionth interview in her life after her 23-year-old daughter was gangraped and brutalized to death. Agencies.[/caption] For the family of the girl, named ‘Damini’, ‘Nirbhaya’, ‘Braveheart’ and simply ‘Delhi gangrape victim’ in popular discourses, this was a battle they never imagined they’d have to fight one day. And the logical end to it, the victim’s parents say, is death penalty for the rapists. “A person who can do what they did to my daughter is not a minor. He shouldn’t be treated as one, they all should get death,” says the mother, echoing the victim’s father’s feelings. “We have got financial assistance from the government, people have supported us. But a strong punishment will give justice to my daughter,” she adds. Speaking to CNN IBN, the gangrape victim’s father too voiced his strong protest against one of the accused being let off with just a three-year-term because he was a minor. He said that the society and the law system of our country should be ashamed that five of the six accused are still alive - primary accused Ram Singh had committed suicide in Tihar Jail. “How is he a minor. He is doing what he did at this age. Imagine if he is let off and he is older, what crimes he will be capable of doing. They should all be decimated from society,” he says, adding that the family is anxiously waiting for the September 10 verdict. In the occasion of the verdict turning out to be mellower than what they expect, the family vowed to move to a higher court. “These people, if they are let off, will become fearful terrorists in future,” he added.
