A fast track court today found all four persons accused in the 16 December Delhi gangrape guilty and will hear arguments on the quantum of sentence to be awarded to them tomorrow. The case had led to unprecedented protests nation-wide and demands for reforms in India’s rape laws. The accused in the case, Mukesh, Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta have been convicted under the Indian Penal Code for the gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student. They were also convicted for attacking her friend that night. The accused also faced charges including kidnapping, dacoity, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence. The student succumbed to her injuries two weeks later at a hospital in Singapore. Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna delivered the verdict, which comes a week after a juvenile accused in the case was sentenced to three years in a special home, the maximum permissible sentence under the Juvenile Justice Act.
