The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday clinched victory in Delhi, paving the way for its comeback in the national capital after a 27-year-long exile. Its main rival Aam Aadmi Party came second and lost the elections after failing to secure enough votes to cross the majority mark.

While the BJP has won 48 out of 70 assembly seats, AAP has secured 22 seats in Delhi. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party also lost key bastions including New Delhi, Jangpura and Greater Kailash. Top AAP leaders including Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Saurabh Bharadwaj did not manage to win their seats either. Amid this, outgoing chief minister Atishi’s victory in Kalkaji came as a breath of fresh air and saved some grace for the party.

Meanwhile, Congress did not win a single seat in the city, a repeat performance for the second time straight. However, the party’s vote share increased from 4.26 per cent in 2020 to over six per cent in 2025 but it was not enough to win a seat.

Out vote share grew significantly even in 2020 but there was no serious erosion in AAP’s vote share. This time we succeeded in chipping away at its support base while keeping our votes intact, a BJP leader said.

The BJP’s vote share had grown from over 32 per cent in 2015 to 38.5 per cent in 2020 against the AAP’s over 54 per cent and 53.5 per cent respectively. This time the BJP’s share jumped to nearly 46 per cent, while the AAP’s fell to 43.5 per cent.

BJP leaders said there was a wider acknowledgement among people this time that the last five years were marked by a overall decline in the city’s water supply, quality of roads, garbage collection and air pollution.

A big section of voters, especially the middle class, who are sensitive to the issues affecting their quality of lives, were firmly behind the BJP, while its welfare promises and assertion to continue with the existing such measures won over a sizeable chunk of poor voters, they added.
