Daily Bulletin: Triple talaq bill to be tabled in RS today; rescue ops in Meghalaya mine to continue with hi-tech equipment; day's top stories

Triple talaq bill to be tabled in Rajya Sabha today The triple talaq bill is likely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, after the Lok Sabha passed the bill amid ruckus and an Opposition walk-out. The lower House had refused to refer it to a select committee. The BJP and Congress have issued whips to their MPs to be present in Parliament on Monday, even as the Congress said it will not allow the passage of the proposed legislation in its present form. All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary KC Venugopal said that the party would join hands with others to prevent the bill from getting passed in the House. The bill seeks to criminalise the practice of instant divorce in the Muslim community. [caption id=“attachment_4912111” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]File image of Parliament. PTI[/caption] Efforts to rescue miners trapped in Meghalaya mine to continue  The multi-agency operation launched on Sunday to rescue the 15 miners trapped in a 370-foot-deep coal mine here did not yield much results as the divers from the Indian Navy and NDRF could not reach the bottom of the pit, officials said. “Six divers from the Indian Navy and NDRF went down the shaft of the mine and reached a depth of about 80 feet from the surface of the water. They spent over two hours searching for traces of the miners in the shaft,” East Jaintia Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtynger told PTI. The SP said the divers could not detect anything on Sunday and on Monday, they would be using hi-tech equipment, including a remotely operated vehicle, to search for the miners. He added that the horizontal holes, where the miners were stuck, were suspected to be at the bottom of the shaft. The officer said pumps were expected to be pressed into service on Monday, in an attempt to lower the water level at the mine shaft. The election was postponed in one seat due to the natural death of a candidate. The Election Commission confirmed the complete result of the constituency in southwestern Gopalganj from where Hasina won bagging 2,29,539 votes, while her BNP opponent got only 123 votes.
