Cyclone Yaas LIVE updates: Jharkhand remains on high alert and has evacuated over 10,000 people to safer zones while operation is still on amid forecast that cyclone ‘Yaas’ would be hitting the state by midnight after pounding neighbouring Odisha and West Bengal, officials said Wednesday. The severe cyclonic storm has now turned into a cyclonic storm, which is further likely to weaken into a deep depression over the next three hours Several roads adjoining the beaches in Bengal’s Digha lay inundated, with some people seen wading through chest-deep water. Many areas in Purba Medinipur, of which Digha is a part, and South 24 Parganas were whiplashed by heavy rain. Over 11.5 lakh people have been evacuated from vulnerable places in West Bengal, while over 2 lakh people have been moved to safety in Odisha. Though IMD had earlier Tuesday forecast that the wind speed during landfall would be around 155 to 165 kmph to gusting 185 kmph, the Doppler RADAR data now indicates the wind speed to be 130-140 kmph gusting to 155 kmph Cyclone Yaas intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening, India Meteorological Department Director General M Mohapatra said. The IMD has also issued a red-coded warning alert to the Odisha and West Bengal coasts. “The severe cyclonic storm ‘‘Yaas’’ (pronounced as ‘‘Yass’’) over northwest and Bay of Bengal intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm,” Mohapatra said. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach near north Odisha coast close to Dhamra port by the early morning of Wednesday. “It is very likely to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Islands close to north of Dhamra and south of Balasore, during noon of Wednesday, 26 May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm,” the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD said.
