At least seven people were killed and many others injured after a cloudburst hit a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, days after a similar tragedy in Kishtwar claimed over 60 lives earlier this week.
Officials said several houses in the Ghati area were buried under rubble and floodwaters, while damage was also reported along the Jammu–Pathankot National Highway. Rescue teams have reached the spot.
The incident occurred during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, cutting off access to the village and causing damage to land and property.
“A joint team of police and SDRF have been rushed to the village and further details are awaited,” officials told PTI.
They added that landslides were also reported in Bagard and Changda villages under Kathua police station, as well as Dilwan-Hutli in Lakhanpur, though no major damage was recorded.
Heavy rains have meanwhile pushed water levels dangerously high in several rivers, with the Ujh flowing close to the danger mark, the officials said.
The Chief Minister has expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction caused by landslides in parts of Kathua district, including Jodh Khad and Juthana, where four people were killed and several others injured. “He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured, and assured all necessary assistance,” an official statement from the CMO said.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also extended condolences to the victims’ families and said he is in regular contact with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the rescue and relief operations.
