By Danish Raza and Pallavi Polanki Earlier today, more than 150 JNU students laid siege to ITO intersection, one of the busiest crossroads in the national capital, to protest the rape of five year old girl in East Delhi. Displaying red flags and placards, they were shouting anti-Delhi police slogans. Delhi traffic police had blocked all roads leading to the juncture which connects New Delhi district to Eastern part of the city. AFP[/caption] This is around 150 meters away from Delhi police headquarters where Aam Aadmi Protesters demonstrated through the day before leaving for the prime minister’s residence. Had it not been a weekend, it would have resulted in a nightmare for commuters crossing ITO intersection. They were demanding the release of Sucheta De, former JNU students union president who was detained earlier in the day at India Gate. Protesters also demanding the sacking of Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar and arrest of the ACP who slapped one of the protesters on Friday. “JS Verma committee report says that action should be taken against a policeman who refuses to lodge an FIR. In this case, we have seen blatant violation of this recommendation,” said Om, JNU student. India Gate had also been turned into a fortress with heavy police deployment around it. About 100-odd students from JNU, DU and Jamia, many of them from the ultra-left-wing student group AISA, had been stopped behind barricades a few 100 metres ahead of India Gate. Protestors, chanting ‘azadi’, are demanding action against the police for failing to act against sexual violence against women and children. There were at least six layers of heavy police deployment between the protestors and India Gate. According to protestors two bus full of JNU students had been prevented from reaching India Gate by the Delhi Police after which they moved to ITO.
