Chhattisgarh: 18 Maoists killed in encounter with police in Bijapur, one cop loses life

Security forces neutralised 18 Naxalites in an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Thursday. The operation, which took place near the Bijapur-Dantewada border, also claimed the life of a police jawan.

In a major crackdown on Left Wing Extremism, security forces eliminated 18 Maoists in an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Thursday, news agency PTI reported citing officials.

A police jawan also lost his life in the exchange of fire.

The gunfight erupted around 7 am in a forested area along the Bijapur-Dantewada border during an anti-Naxal operation conducted by a joint team of security personnel in the Gangaloor police station limits (Bijapur), the security official said to news agency PTI.

Security forces recovered the bodies of 18 Naxalites, along with firearms and explosives, from the site, he said.

According to the official, a jawan from the state police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG) unit was also killed in the encounter.
