Chandigarh then, Mumbai now: IT professional stalks woman, follows her home at 2 am

The Mumbai Police arrested an IT software professional on Tuesday morning, for allegedly stalking and following a woman to her Lokhandwala house, ringing her doorbell and standing outside her building at 2 am on Sunday night.

The victim, Aditi Nagpaul, told the media that the stalker came to her house at 2 am and asked for water. When she ignored his requests, he got angry. Later, when they checked with security officials, it was found that the stalker already knew Nagpaul’s residence and had entered the building saying he was a guest.

Prior to this incident, Nagpaul was travelling with another woman and two kids in a car. The police told Hindustan Times that she was followed by a man later identified as Malad resident Niteshkumar Sharma. Sharma left only after Nagpaul approached security, said senior police inspector Bharat Gaikwad. On Monday night, she narrated her ordeal on social media. As her Facebook and Twitter posts went viral, social media citizens demanded quick action. An FIR under Section 354 (D) (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code was also filed.

This incident, similar to the stalking incident that shocked Chandigarh  on Saturday, has again raised questions over women’s safety across India.
