CBSE orders re-exam of Class 10 mathematics, Class 12 economics papers; SIT to probe case

In the wake of reports of paper leaks, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to re-conduct the examinations for economics paper for Class XII and the mathematics paper for Class X.

The dates of the reexamination for the two board exam papers will be announced in a week. In an official order, the central board said that it has taken cognisance “of certain happenings in the conduct of certain examinations”.

It further said that the dates for the fresh examinations and other details will be published on CBSE’s website,  cbse.nic.in .  The reason for the decision was not revealed in the CBSE order.

Panic gripped Class XII students on Monday after claims were made on social media sites that the economics paper had been leaked. The CBSE had denied the claims, saying “We have checked with all examination centres and the paper was not leaked.” “The source of the circulation of this information is not known yet,” the board said.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered on the complaint of CBSE regional director in PS Crime Branch and a dedicated SIT has been constituted to investigate the case, ANI reported.

News18 quoted sources as saying on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Human Resource Minister Prakash Javadekar and expressed his unhappiness with the paper leak issue. Modi also demanded strict action against culprits. Javadekar addressed the matter at a press conference, and said an internal investigation is underway.

The ongoing CBSE board exams have been in the news for alleged errors in the papers and reports of paper leaks.

A Class X English paper allegedly carried certain errors and spelling mistakes, which had led to confusion among students. The board responded by saying that it was undecided on providing compensation to the affected students. The Class XII accountancy paper was reportedly leaked on WhatsApp and social media, which prompted Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia to order a probe and lodge complaint with the CBSE. More than 28 lakh candidates appeared for the Class X and XII examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education from 5 March. A total of 16,38,428 candidates had registered for the Class X examination, while 11,86,306 candidates had registered for Class XII examination. With inputs from PTI
