DSP Zia Ul Haq was lynched and murdered at Balipur village, 75 km west of Pratapgarh district headquarters, on 2 March 2013. He had gone there after the village head Nanhe Yadav had been killed by angry villagers along with his brother. Subsequently his wife, Parveen Azad, accused Raja Bhaiyya of being responsible for his death.

A subsequent report by CNN-IBN noted that there had been enmity between the two men, saying it had accessed a criminal history sheet that was prepared against Raja Bhaiya by the DSP. “Dated September 5, 2012, the criminal record states 47 cases against Raguraj Pratap Singh, aka Raja Bhaiya, since 1991”, the report said.

The CBI had registered four cases pertaining to the three murders and booked Raja Bhaiya in one of them.
