Ramesh, a practising chartered accountant, had contested for the post of the Mayor of Salem's municipal body in 2011 and had also been the state RSS secretary between 1987 and 1992.

The motive behind the murder is still to be ascertained, but the BJP cadre has alleged a possible political conspiracy given he is the second party leader to be murdered over the last nine months.

BJP state medical wing secretary Dr V Aravind was killed outside his clinic in Vellore in October 2012.

BJP cadre had prevented the body from being taken to the hospital and protested following the incident by pelting stones at buses.
