With the BJP checking most of its important tasks to form the new government off its list, all eyes are now on the appointment of a new BJP chief as incumbent leader JP Nadda was inducted into the Union cabinet earlier this week.

JP Nadda assumed office as the Union Health Minister on Tuesday. His term as the BJP president ended this month following which the party began its search to appoint a new leader at the top position.

Nadda was given the position of BJP’s working National President in 2019 and was elevated to a full-time post in January 2020. While his term was supposed to end in January 2023, the BJP National Executive decided to extend it till June 2024.

BJP to get working president soon

The ruling party has already started holding meetings to pick the new working president. The working president will be elected after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his official visit to Italy for the G7 summit, according to NDTV.

The decision to hold parliamentary meetings comes amid RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s sharp comments on BJP’s electoral setbacks in UP and Maharashtra.

The working president, chosen by BJP’s parliamentary board, will be expected to work till the election process within the party concludes by the end of the year.

Like Nadda’s case, the new working president’s service can be transformed into a full-time role. The term of the newly elected president will commence in January next year.

Who is in fray?

Several names that might be considered for the job are making rounds. Already, two of these names – Dharmendra Pradhan and Shivraj Singh Chouhan – have been ruled out after they were given union cabinet positions.

However, four names are still in the race, according to News18.

  • Vinod Tawde: A former minister of Maharashtra and currently BJP’s general secretary, Tawde’s name is reportedly being actively discussed among the party brass

  • K Laxman: BJP’s OBC Morcha Chief, Laxman’s name is also being considered for the party’s presidential post

  • Sunil Bansal: The general secretary and in-charge of three states – West Bengal, Telangana and Odisha – Sunil Bansal’s name is also being considered

  • Om Mathur: A Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, Om Mathur is in the race to become BJP’s national president after JP Nadda

Amid the party’s push to represent more women, reports suggest that the BJP may also get a woman as its chief, making it the first time to do so.
