Bengaluru's killer potholes: 21-year-old woman pillion rider dies near Devanhalli; fourth death in 11 days

A 21-year-old pillion rider died after being hit by a truck in Bengaluru on Wednesday after her sister swerved the vehicle to avoid a pothole and both women were flung to the ground, media reports said. This is one of the many pothole deaths in the city in recent times. AFP[/caption] G Veena, a resident of Kundana in Devanhalli, was riding the scooter with her sister, G Lakshmi, 24, police said. Veena died on the spot while Lakshmi, who sustained serious injuries, has been admitted to a nearby hospital. Police have registered a case against the truck driver, who is absconding. According to Times Now, there have been four pothole deaths in Bengaluru in the last 11 days. On Monday, a woman pillion rider of a two-wheeler was crushed to death under a truck while the rider was negotiating potholes at the Nayanadahalli junction in Bengaluru. The 47-year-old Radha Anjanappa from Nagwara, east Bengaluru was with her nephew Ravi Kumar, the rider, who sustained minor injuries, reported  The Times of India.  Both were on their way to Ramanagara, 60 kilometres from Bengaluru, when they slipped from the scooter while driving through a bad road and were hit by a truck. Around a week ago, an elderly couple was killed after a bus ran over them on Mysuru road flyover, The Indian Express reported. They were trying to avoid a pothole too. The state government and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city civic body, has come under sharp criticism following Monday’s  incident. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah visited the accident site on Monday. Metro construction was going on in the stretch where the accident took place, making the road difficult to drive on following the heavy rainfall that the city had been experiencing. Facing heat over battered city roads becoming a nightmare for commuters, Siddaramaiah on Monday directed the civic agency to make the city roads pothole free within a fortnight. Three lives have been lost in pothole-related incidents in the past one week while injuring several others. With inputs from agencies
