Amid political turmoil in Bangladesh, several Bangladeshi nationals on Wednesday attempted to sneak into Indian territory at the International Border along North Bengal, said a senior BSF officer

However, their attempts were thwarted by the BSF personnel.

“A large group of Bangladesh nationals gathered in patches at various locations at the International Border along North Bengal today evening. They were attempting to sneak into Indian territory,” ANI quoted a senior BSF officer as saying.

The officer added that the BSF dispersed them with the help of Border Guard Bangladesh and the Civil Administration.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also raised his concerns over the issue, saying if the turmoil continues then the people of Bangladesh will come to India.

“The incident of Bangladesh is a matter of concern for us for two reasons. Firstly, if this turmoil continues, then the people of Bangladesh will come to India. We need to make our borders safe,” added Sarma.

Secondly, he said, the concern also remains that Bangladesh does not become a valley of North East extremists.

“All extremists of the North East were removed from Bangladesh during the rule of Shiekh Haseena. It will remain our concern that Bangladesh does not become a valley of North East extremists… We hope that the Indian government will be in talks with the new government and that the concerns of the North East will be considered… PM Modi will make sure that the North East does not become a safe haven for terrorists…,” said the Assam CM.

The recent violence and unrest over job quotas in Bangladesh led Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India on Monday. In response, security has been heightened in states bordering Bangladesh, including West Bengal and Tripura.

The BSF has reinforced security along the 4,096 km India-Bangladesh border, with Acting Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary visiting the Petrapole border in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.

West Bengal, which shares a 2,217 km border with Bangladesh, along with Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Assam (262 km), and Mizoram (318 km), has seen increased security measures.

On Tuesday, the BSF held meetings with state officials and local residents to enhance security. Villagers have been advised to avoid traveling in border areas at night.
