Muslim bodies to collectively decide on challenging Babri case verdict: Firangi Mahali

All-India Muslim Personal Law Board senior member Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali on Wednesday said organisations representing the community will together decide whether they need to challenge or not the CBI court verdict in the Babri mosque demolition case.

Refusing to comment on their acquittal, Mahali said, “I don’t have anything to say on the verdict. Everybody knows how the Babri mosque was sacrificed on 6 December, 1992 in Ayodhya and how all rules were flouted.”

In its verdict on the Ramjanmabhoomi land dispute case on 9 November last year, the Supreme Court had said Muslims were wrongly deprived of their mosque, he said, adding that the demolition of the masjid was an illegal act.

It is for the court to decide if anyone is guilty or not. Now, Muslim organisations will sit together and decide if an appeal is to be made against it; whether there would be any benefit in filing an appeal or not, only time will tell, he said. He said Muslims in the country have always honoured court verdicts and will continue to do so.

Uma Bharti says she would ‘prefer to hang than seek bail’

One day before the verdict, on Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharti, one of the politicians accused of criminal conspiracy in the Babri Masjid demolition case, has said that she would “prefer to hang than seek bail” in the case if found guilty, reports  The Hindu.

Bharti made the remarks in a letter to BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda on September 26. Nadda announced new office-bearers for the saffron party on the same day and dropped Bharti as a vice-president of the BJP. In her letter, written before the political rejig, Bharti said it was okay if her decision not to seek bail if found guilty in the case made Nadda drop her from his team.

“I am proud of my participation in the Ayodhya movement and seeking bail would, I believe dilute this participation,” she wrote. “Even if I have to hang for having participated, it will be acceptable to me. In such circumstances whether or not you would want to keep me in your team is for you to consider.”

“We welcome the court judgement. It is the victory of truth,” Kokje said. “The court took nearly 28 years to give its judgement, but it was clear from the day one that it (demolition) was not a pre-planned incident. ‘Karsevaks’ were not called to Ayodhya for demolishing the mosque. Its razing was a sudden incident,” he said.

Babri verdict runs counter to 2019 Ayodhya judgment: Congress

Reacting to the Babri verdict, the Congress on Wednesday said the verdict runs counter to the 2019 Supreme Court Judgement and the Constitutional spirit. The party asked the Central and Uttar Pradesh Governments to file an appeal, against the decision of the Special Court. The Congress said the “entire country (had) witnessed a deep-rooted political conspiracy by BJP-RSS and its leaders to destroy the country’s communal amity and brotherhood for usurping power at any cost.”

“The then BJP government of Uttar Pradesh was a co-conspirator in the designed attack on India’s Constitutional ethos. So much so that the Supreme Court was misled by filing a wrong Affidavit on oath. It is only after detailed examination of all these aspects, facts, and evidence that the Supreme Court held the demolition of Masjid to be “an egregious violation of the rule of law”,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.

“Every Indian, who has innate faith in the Constitution as also in the spirit of Communal amity and brotherhood, expects and urges the Central and State Governments to file an Appeal, against the decision of the Special Court founded in error and follow the letter of the law and the Constitution, without any partiality and pre-meditated prejudice. This is the true calling of rule of law and our Constitution,” he added.
