 "Avalanche strikes Uttarakhand's Badrinath, 16 of 57 trapped workers rescued")
An avalanche occurred on Friday near the village of Mana in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.
Officials told PTI that 57 workers engaged in road construction were trapped and 16 of them had been rescued by 3 pm.
The avalanche buried a camp of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) between the village of Mana and Badrinath in Chamoli, DM Sandeep Tiwari told PTI.
Separately, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police have been pressed into the rescue operation.
Dhami said, “Out of the 57 BRO labourers trapped in the avalanche, 16 have been rescued. Efforts are on to rescue the rest. The help of ITBP and other departments is being taken in the rescue operations. Our disaster management department and the entire administration is fully alert. Our effort is to rescue all safely as soon as possible.”
Dhami further said that personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have also left for the site.
The avalanche has been reported when snowfall and rain have affected everyday life in HImachal. The PTI has reported that nearly 200 roads have been closed due to heavy snowfall several areas have been cut off, such as Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba and Shimla districts.
Before the avalanche, a landslide at Banala disrupted the traffic on Manali-Kiratpur National Highway, as per PTI.
Previously on Thursday, the Chandigarh-based Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) had issued an avalanche warning for a period of 24 hours starting 5 pm for places located above 2,400 metres in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar districts of Uttarakhand.
