Attack on CRPF camp in Udhampur leaves two dead, including one militant

A woman and a militant were killed in a shootout between security forces and separatist guerrillas in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, in which five other people were injured on Monday. Three CRPF troopers and two civilians were also injured in the attack on the CRPF camp on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Kud area of Udhampur District on Monday. The gunfight took place on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway after the forces laid an ambush at Kud town, some 110 km from Jammu city, following intelligence inputs that some militants were travelling in a passenger bus on the national highway. PTI[/caption] The vehicle was stopped near Kud town which is famous for its sweets shops, and “two militants heavily armed disembarked from a passenger bus and opened fire at the security forces and in an exchange of fire one militant was killed and a woman also lost her life in the cross fire,” a security official told IANS here. Security forces have started combing the area and reinforcements have been rushed there to ensure that the surviving militant did not escape, the official added. “Heavy firing is going on in the area and all senior police officers are on their way to the spot,” the SSP Udhampur said earlier in the day. Monday’s attack has been the second in the last 24 hours. On Sunday, four policemen were injured in a militant attack in south Kashmir’s Qazigund. At least five attacks were carried out by militants in the past two weeks in Kashmir valley, inflicting casualties on security forces. On 3 June, 2016, three BSF troopers were killed and 11 others, including three civilians, were injured in a guerrilla attack at a security forces convoy in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara town, an attack for which the terror group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility. However, over the last one month, militants have killed five policemen who were not deployed on counter-insurgency operations, but were doing routine policing like traffic control and management of law and order.

Most of such attacks have come against unarmed policemen.
