The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has chosen senior party leader Atishi as the next Chief Minister of Delhi.

Atishi will succeed Arvind Kejriwal, who will resign as the CM of Delhi later in the day. She is currently in Arvind Kejriwal’s Delhi government where she holds education and public works departments among other portfolios.

The PTI reported Kejriwal had proposed Atishi’s name to be his successor and all AAP MLAs unanimously accepted her as the next Delhi CM.

Atishi has been named as the next chief minister days after Kejriwal announced he would resign and seek early elections in Delhi.

After walking out of jail on bail in the Delhi excise policy case, Kejriwal said he would only attend office after receiving the “certificate of honesty” from people of Delhi in elections.

“I am going to resign after two days and ask people whether I am honest. I want to appeal to the public, if you think Kejriwal is honest, vote for me. If you think Kejriwal is guilty, do not vote for me. Every vote of yours will be a certificate of my honesty,” Kejriwal had said.

Drawing a parallel with Lady Sita from the Hindu epic Ramayana, Kejriwal said he would go through the “agnipariksha (trial by fire)” just like Sita did.

“I will only sit in the chief minister’s chair after the people give me a certificate of honesty. I want to give ‘agnipariksha’ (trial by fire) after coming out of jail…. When Lord Ram returned from his exile after 14 years, Sita Maiyya had to undergo ‘agnipariksha’. I have come out of jail and I am ready to undergo agnipariksha,” said Kejriwal.

After Kejriwal’s announcement, names of his Sunita and Atishi were doing rounds for the post of the chief minister.

Kejriwal on Friday walked out of jail after months of imprisonment in the Delhi excise policy case. He is under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case. Fellow party leader, former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, is also facing probes in the case.
