Arvind Kejriwal is “creating a ground for bail” by deliberately eating mangoes, aloo puri and sweets as well as having tea with sugar to raise his blood sugar level, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) told a Delhi Court on Thursday.

The submission were made by the counsel of ED, Zoheb Hossain, before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja who was hearing Kejriwal’s application seeking permission to consult his regular doctor in jail through virtual conferencing.

Kejriwal has moved an application to allow virtual consultations with his doctor thrice a week for monitoring his blood sugar levels and other vital parameters.

“Today, he (Kejriwal) is in court custody. He is in custody because of our case. The cause of concern is he was allowed prescribed home cooked food because he claimed he has high diabetes. But he is having mangoes, sweets and sugar with with tea. This is a basis to create a ground for bail,” Hossain told the Rouse Avenue Court.

Diabetic Kejriwal increases sugar intake in jail

The court was told that Kejriwal has been “consciously consuming items like tea with sugar, banana, sweets (1/2 pieces), poori, aaloo Sabji, etc. on regular basis, despite being a patient of diabetes mellitus type II and knowing very well that consumption of such items results into increase in blood sugar.”

“This is being done to create a medical emergency, to obtain sympathetic treatment
from the Ld. Court of Law on medical grounds,” the ED counsel told the court.

At the outset, Advocate Vivek Jain appearing for Kejriwal told the court that the application is being withdrawn to file a better application.

The ED counsel, however, said the agency was concerned about the expression “alarming increase in diabetic levels” used in the application.

Court seeks Kejriwal’s diet chart & medicines details from Tihar Jail authorities

“We wrote to the jail authorities and asked them what is the diet chart and medicines he is taking…. When he was allowed on April 1 home cooked food… please see. He is claiming high diabetes but he is having mangoes, sweets and tea with sugar…. This is a basis to create a ground for bail,” Zoheb said.

The court disposed of the application and listed the matter for Friday (April 19) at 2 pm and has asked the Tihar jail authorities to file a medical report on Kejriwal, including his diet.

The Delhi CM was arrested by the ED on the night of March 21 in connection with the money laundering probe related to Delhi excise policy case. His judicial custody is expiring on April 23.
