Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a high-level meeting on Sunday after a series of terror attacks shook Jammu and Kashmir, killing and injuring security personnel as well as civilians.

Shah held a review meeting on Friday to assess the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, which will see the participation of several pilgrims from across India.

Sunday’s meeting is likely to be attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior officials of the CRPF and Army. The meeting will be chaired by Shah.

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a spate of terror attacks for four days in the districts of Reasi, Doda and Kathua. The incidents come at a time when the Election Commission is in the process of conducting assembly elections in the state at the order of the Supreme Court which directed the poll body to hold elections before September 2024.

During the review meeting, senior security officials briefed Shah on the current situation in J&K and apprised him of the measures taken in the state to prevent further attacks.

The high-level security meeting by Shah comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to assess the security measures where he directed senior officials to ensure the “deployment of the full spectrum” of “counter-terror capabilities”.

PM Modi, according to reports, also spoke to Shah to discuss counter-terror operations and deployment of security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday held a protest against the recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, seeking an explanation for the “alarming” security situation contrary to the government’s claims of restoration of peace in the Union Territory.

Led by PDP additional general secretary Rajinder Manhas and spokesperson S Varinder Singh Sonu, dozens of party workers took out a protest march from the PDP office at Gandhi Nagar.

The protesters pushed forward through police barricade and briefly held a sit-in near the Jammu-airport road before returning to their office.

“We are concerned over the alarming security situation in Jammu ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra. The attacks reflect a security failure,” Manhas told reporters.
