Alleging brutality, AAP to move SC against Delhi police

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will move Supreme Court against the alleged brutality done to its volunteers by Delhi police last week. Eighteen AAP volunteers who were in judicial custody were released on bail on Saturday evening. On Thursday evening, more than two dozen AAP volunteers staged protest in North East Delhi’s Gokulpuri police station against non registration of FIR in a gangrape case. AAP said that Delhi police targeted the volunteers and attacked them with lathis and belts leaving many with severe injuries. Delhi police claimed that AAP volunteers were damaging public property. After the protests, Delhi police registered FIR and arrested two local residents in the case for gangraping a woman and keeping her husband with them for three days. The couple hails from Bihar and had come to Delhi in search of job when a group of them lured them promising them work. The couple narrated the horror to an auto rickshaw driver who convinced them to get an FIR lodged. He alerted AAP volunteers who then reached the police station. PTI[/caption] On Monday, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal briefed media along with volunteers many of them had plaster on their hands. “No one has any clue about the victim. Why is she not coming out? Where is she? Where have they (police) sent them?” asked Kejriwal, adding that police arrested AAP volunteers on false charges. Kejriwal said Delhi police was working out of vendetta as AAP has pointed fingers on police’s inefficiency on various occasions. He added that he will go to voters with this issue during campaigning for upcoming assembly polls. “We know that Delhi police is not under state government. It is under union government. But it is Congress’ rule at state and Centre,” he said. AAP volunteers said police manhandled them. Male cops hurled abuses on female volunteers and had brutally beaten them, they said. They also claimed that police hampered the medical checkup so that their actual injuries are not reflected in records. Somnath Bharti, lawyer and AAP member said that in Supreme Court, he will demand compensation for injured volunteers and action against policemen responsible for atrocities on AAP members.
