Nearly a year after the court reserved its verdict, the Delhi High Court today upheld the life sentences for the three men convicted of abducting and killing Nitish Katara in 2002 . Here is all you need to do about the case: [caption id=“attachment_1462601” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Bharti Yadav exits the court after an appearance in the Nitish Katara murder case. AFP[/caption] * Nitish Katara was murdered on 17 February 2002, by Vikas Yadav the son Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav. * Katara’s body was found on a highway. He had been battered to death with a hammer, following which diesel was poured on him and he was set on fire. * Vikas and Vishal Yadav, and Sukhdev Pehalwan (Vikas’s cousin) are serving life terms for abducting and killing Nitish Katara, a business executive and the son of an IAS officer. * The prosecution told the high court that Nitish Katara and Bharti Yadav (daughterof DP Yadav) were in an “intense relationship” and her family’s opposition to their friendship led to the killing of Katara. * Nitish’s murder took place on the night of the wedding of a friend who was known to him and Bharti. * The prosecution and the victim’s mother Neelam Katara have filed appeals seeking enhancement of sentences of the convicts. They sought death penalty for the murderers. * Vikas and Vishal were convicted by the trial court in 2008. * Their accomplice Pehlwan, who had absconded for some time but was arrested in 2005, was tried separately and sentenced to life term by the trial court.
