Indian Navy launched its new destroyer INS Visakhapatnam in Mumbai on Monday. After the launch of the ship Rear Admiral AK Saxena, Director General (Naval Design) said, “Kolkata Class did not have a full-fledged Total Atmosphere Control System (TAC). The TAC system provides you with the capability of operating in a fall-out region, be it a nuclear, chemical or biological almost endlessly…because the complete air being taken inside is through nuclear, biological and chemical filters except in the machinery compartment.” This new warship has enhanced capability to operate in nuclear, biological and chemical atmospheres. According to an Indian Navy brochure highlighting the official parameters of the vessel, this ship is among the most technologically advanced guided missile destroyers in the world. Twitter @ibnlive[/caption] Here are some facts you need to know about Indian Navy’s latest achievement - * INS Visakhapatnam is the lead ship of the Navy’s Project 15B. * It is the first of the four follow-up ships of the successful Kolkata class guided missile destroyers. * The total cost of the project was around Rs 29,600 crore. * The ship is being designed by Indian Navy’s in-house organisation, the Directorate of Naval Design. * The design of the ship is almost 65 percent indigenous, which is significantly higher compared to its predecessors * According to the India Navy release, the ships are being constructed by Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Ltd. * It is the largest destroyer commissioned by the Indian Navy weighing 7,300 tonnes. * The ship spans 163 meters in length and 17.4 meters at the beam and is designed to achieve speed in excess of 30 knots, as per the Indian Navy brochure * It is designed for a complement of 50 officers and 250 sailors. * This ship will have a full-fledged Total Atmosphere Control System (TAC) * It will be equipped with 8 Brahmos missiles and will have the same Ukrainian-built Zorya gas turbines as that of the Kolkata class destroyers * It will also be outfitted with the Israeli Multi-Function Surveillance Threat Alert Radar (MF-STAR) * This is one of the few warships in the world to have a Multi Function Surveillance Threat Alert Radar to provide data to Long Range Surface to Air Missile system * The brochure adds that the ship is equipped with Ship Data Network (SDN), Automatic Power Management System (APMS) and Combat Management System (CMS) and is termed as ‘Network of Networks’.
