Under fire for worsening misgovernance in Uttar Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was heckled and faced slogan-shouting when he visited riot-hit Muzaffarnagar on Sunday, over a week after violence broke out. The Samajwadi Party leader first visited Kawal, the village where the first three murders occurred on August 27, leading to the communal tension followed by the panchayat and Mahapanchayat of Jats attended by over 2 lakh people. According to reports, Shahnawaz was first attacked and killed by the latter duo for allegedly passing lewd remarks against their cousin. Sachin and Gaurav were then killed in retaliation. Akhilesh appealed for calm during his visit to Kawal. Already, amid rising anger against the Akhilesh government from even within the Samajwadi Party, former union minister and SP leader Sompal Shastri told reporters that he will not contest the 2014 elections. The governor’s reoprt on the violence is also reported to lay the blame squarely on the state government’s inaction. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is also expected to visit Muzaffarnagar on Monday. Also, the state government on Sunday suspended Senior Superintendent of Police Subhash Dubey for failing to curb the violence. Dubey was appointed only a few days ago.
