An Air India plane with 242 passengers crashed in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar, Gujarat, on Thursday (June 12), Gujarat’s State Police Control Room confirmed.
The accident , involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flying from Ahmedabad to London, happened when the plane tried to take off.
Thick smoke from the crash site could be seen from Vastrapur, causing panic in nearby areas.
Scary visuals have emerged on social media, showing the plane going down before turning into a giant fireball. The plane reportedly crashed in a densely populated area.
Meghaninagar to Airport Distance
The plane crashed soon after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport around 2 pm, police said.
The crash site in Meghaninagar is hardly 3 kilometres away from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.
“We are acquiring details about the casualties,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kanan Desai.
Fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, said fire officer Jayesh Khadia.
Several injured persons were taken to city civil hospital, an official said.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said it was sending three teams to the crash site.
Air India also confirmed the incident in a statement.
