External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will be on a six-day visit to the United States from December 24 to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues with his counterparts and also chair a conference of the Consul Generals of India in the US, said the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday.
Jaishankar’s visit will be the first high-level visit from India to the US after Donald Trump won the presidential election. It comes ahead of the President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
“External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit the United States of America from December 24-29,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
“He will be meeting counterparts to discuss key bilateral, regional and global issues,” it said in a brief statement.
Jaishankar’s last visit to the US coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to attend the Quad Leaders’ Summit, where he joined President Joe Biden, Australian PM Anthony Albanese, and former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. During the visit, PM Modi was warmly received by Biden at his personal residence in Wilmington, Delaware.
Last week, Donald Trump hinted towards a more stringent trade stance towards India, stating that his upcoming administration to resort to tit-for-tat approach. “If they tax us, we tax them the same amount," he said.
