Ahead of Modi-Trump meet, India revives push for naval aircraft deal.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington, India will be reviving its push for the procurement of six more advanced P-81 long-range maritime patrol and submarine-hunting aircraft, The Times of India reported citing sources. The deal was put on hold around three years ago.

A source said to TOI that the case was being “re-examined” due to the operational need to further expand the surveillance capabilities of the Indian Navy in the Indian Ocean.

The source emphasised that the US has been asked to quote a reasonable price for the aircrafts for government-to-government sales.

The Indian Navy currently has 12 operational P-81s aircraft in the Indian Ocean. The operational aircraft are equipped with multiple-mode radars and advanced electro-optic sensors. The Boeing-made aircraft were procured under two deals, costing $3.2 million.

The main function of the P-81 planes is to hunt and destroy enemy submarines and warships.

In May 2021, the U.S. State Department notified its Congress about the proposed sale of six P-81s worth $2.4 billion to India. Later, the deal was put on hold by India.

Chinese presence in the Indian ocean

The deal comes amid threats from the escalating presence of Chinese naval activities in the region. The Indian Navy is now re-evaluating this acquisition to bolster its surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

PM Modi’s US visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day working visit to the United States, scheduled for February 12 and 13, 2025. During his visit, he is all set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump for the first time since he assumed office in the White House.

This visit will include discussions on key issues such as trade relations, defense cooperation, and energy diversification.
