After Salman hit-and-run case, Jahnvi Gadkar gets her license back

Barely a week after Salman Khan was acquitted in the 2002 hit-and-run case by the Bombay High Court, Mumbai-based lawyer Jahnvi Gadkar, who is accused in a drunken driving case that killed two people, has been given back her license. PTI[/caption] A sessions court in Mumbai passed this order, and also directed that her car should be returned to her, provided she retains its colour, reports DNA. However, the court has put forth a condition that she could be given back her license only after getting the required endorsement from the regional transport office (RTO), according to a report in Hindustan Times. While directing that the license be returned, the court has observed that the investigation in the case has been completed, and that the case needs to be dealt with differently as the accused is a woman, according to the DNA report. On 5 August, after spending 57 days in jail, Gadkar was granted bail against a surety of Rs. 30000. She has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Gadkar, who works as a corporate lawyer, crashed her Audi into a taxi resulting in the death of two people on 10 July. She had allegedly been driving under the influence of alcohol on the Eastern Freeway. Two persons - Mohammed Abdul Sayyad (55) and Mohammed Salim Sabuwala (50) - had lost their lives when Gadkar’s car rammed into their taxi. Interestingly, this is not the first time that Gadkar has been accused of rash driving. Earlier, the police had stated before a court that she has been involved in accidents on previous occasions as well. The police had then opposed granting of bail to her, arguing that she could repeat the offence. However, the court did not accept the prosecution’s arguments and granted her bail.
