Child rights activists in Chennai have forced authorities to shut down two Facebook pages in Tamil created to attract pedophiles. The pages, called ‘c_hinna ponnu karpazhipom_’ and ‘_chinna ponnu veriyarga_l’ which in Tamil roughly translates to ‘young girl having sex’, had photographs of young girls with a number of sexually explicit comments. They were spotted by social activists who immediately contacted the authorities to take it down, CNN-IBN reports. The channel reported that the reason Facebook was unable to pick up on these pages was because of the language barrier. Both, the page and the comments, are largely in Tamil and it is difficult to identify regional language words. Another reason is that the photographs uploaded show fully clothes young girls, which technically doesn’t fall under the obscenity category. The reporter went on to say the the online predators could have taken those photographs from innocent posts uploaded by young children or their parents, which has sparked immense outrage all over the state. The real purpose of the pages became evident only when the photographs were connected to the page names and comments, and once spotted by the public, action was swiftly undertaken. Activists filed a complaint with the police commissioner against both Facebook and the creator of the page which lead to them being shut down. Meanwhile, the IP address of the offenders are being tracked. This isn’t the first time that a Facebook page in a regional language containing sexually explicit content about young girls has been shut down. In April 2015, a similar page in Malayalam was shut in the neighboring state of Kerala. The page, called Kochu Sundarikal was shut down after activists complained to the Kerala cyber cell, according to a report by The News Minute.
