Abdul Karim Lala Telgi, kingpin of the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, passed away in Bengaluru on Thursday due to multiple organ failure, according to reports.

Telgi, who was suffering from meningitis, was in critical condition on Tuesday. He was serving a 30-year prison sentence at the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru after being convicted in the stamp paper scam. News18[/caption] He was arrested in Ajmer in November 2001 and was suffering from diabetes and hypertension for over 20 years, besides other ailments, including AIDS, NDTV reported. Times Now reported that Telgi “collapsed” in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, where he had been serving his jail sentence, after which he was admitted to hospital. A Special Investigation Team unearthed his fake stamp paper racket after tapping a number of phones in 2002-03, The Financial Express reported. In 2007, the court convicted and sentenced Telgi to 30 years rigorous imprisonment. Telgi produced fake stamp paper and then sold it to banks, insurers and others, the report added. A fine of Rs 202 crore was also imposed on him.
