AAP leader Ashutosh on Friday broke down during a debate on Headlines Today over the death of farmer Gajendra Singh Rathore.
Apart from Ashutosh, BJP’s Sambit Patra and Gajendra’s daughter Megha Singh were part of the discussion.
A sobbing Ashutosh apologised to Megha and said, “I couldn’t save your father.”
Gajendra Singh had reportedly killed himself on Wednesday during AAP’s anti-land bill rally by hanging himself from a tree. A few AAP volunteers tried to stop him and managed to bring him down. But the farmer from Rajasthan was declared dead after he was taken to the hospital.
During the debate, Ashutosh urged BJP leaders, including PM Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh and Sambit Patra, not to play politics over the issue, as he wept uncontrollably. “We are being targetted by the BJP and the Congress,” he said.
As Ashutosh wept on live TV, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “I am very sad Ashutosh is crying.”
“Don’t cry, Ashutosh. One should not get carried away by emotions. A politician should rise above his emotions and find solutions to problems,” Patra said.
Since Gajendra Singh’s death, a blame game has ensued between the BJP and the AAP.
The BJP has repeatedly blamed AAP for the incident because New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal continued with his speech even after Gajendra’s death. The AAP, on the other hand, has claimed that it was because of Modi government’s pro-rich policies that the farmers were dying.
In a note that Gajendra Singh had thrown from the tree before killing himself, he had mentioned that he had three children and he had lost all his crops this season.
