The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday officially announced Swati Maliwal, the current head of the Delhi Commission for Women, as its nominee for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for 19 January. Additionally, the party decided to re-nominate Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for a second term in the upper house of Parliament, PTI quoted party sources as saying. The announcement of these nominations was made by the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC). “DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal has been nominated for the first time. The PAC has decided to continue with Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for their respective second term as Rajya Sabha members,” PTI quoted a source. Sushil Kumar Gupta is reportedly ending his tenure as a Rajya Sabha member, and he has expressed his desire to actively participate in electoral politics in Haryana, where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) plans to contest elections later in the year. A court in Delhi has allowed Singh, who was arrested in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, to sign forms and documents for his Rajya Sabha renomination. Special Judge M K Nagpal passed the order on an application filed by the politician, who submitted that his present term as a member of the Rajya Sabha is expiring on 27 January and the Returning Officer has issued a notice on January 2 for conduct of the election and nominations for the same are to be submitted by 9 January. The application sought a direction to the Tihar Jail Superintendent to allow Singh to sign the documents. With inputs from agencies
