The house, dominated by the AAP, backed the proposal by voice vote. Assembly speaker Ram Niwas Goel presented her bouquet and welcomed her. Birla succeeds Bandana Kumari, also of the AAP who resigned last week. Birla completed her post-graduation in Mass Communication and worked for a private news channel before she joined AAP in 2012. Birla – a legislator from Mangolpuri constituency – was a cabinet minister during Arvind Kejriwal government’s 49 days tenure from 28 December, 2013 to 14 February, 2014. She had portfolios of Women and Child, Social Welfare and Languages in Delhi Government.
