The body of a man who was run over by a train in Uttar Pradesh lay on the tracks for a good six hours and was reportedly run over by another 16 trains before the police turned up to take it away.
The reason? Government Railway Police and Bareilly police station officials were squabbling over whose jurisdiction the body lay in.
According to a report in The Times of India , the man was run over by the Akal Takht Express, which runs from Howrah to Amritsar.
While the locals alerted the police about the accident, the driver of the train informed the control room.
The GRP staff the police about the accident and told them to take the body for post mortem. But neither the GRP nor the local police took custody of the body.
In the end it was only when railway officials put their foot down that the police station officials took charge of the body and sent it for analysis. But as the report noted, “By then, it had been mangled beyond recognition.”
