The World Health Organisation has dismissed as “false allegations” a media report that it withheld information about the new coronavirus following pressure from China.The UN agency said in a statement late Saturday that a German magazine’s report about a telephone conversation between WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Chinese President Xi Jinping on 21 January was “unfounded and untrue”.
Weekly _Der Spiegel r_eported that Xi asked Tedros during the call to hold back information about human-to-human transmission of the virus and delay declaring a pandemic. The magazine quoted Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, BND, which declined to comment on Sunday. Der Spiegel also claimed that the BND concluded up to six weeks of time to fight the outbreak had been lost due to China’s information policy. The UN agency said Tedros and Xi “have never spoken by phone” and added that “such inaccurate reports distract and detract from WHO’s and the world’s efforts to end the COVID-19 pandemic.”

A 35-year-old woman, who died in Wardha district of Maharashtra on Friday, tested COVID-19 positive on Sunday, officials said. The test results of the woman’s swab samples, which were received on Sunday, confirmed that she was coronavirus positive, they said. As Wardha district was a green zone with not a single case of coronavirus infection found so far, the woman’s death has shocked the residents of Hiwara Tanda village in Arvi tahsil, where she was from.

The Punjab government on Sunday said it has decided to grant an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 50 lakh to dependants of its employees, dying in harness while fighting against coronavirus crisis, reports PTI.
The compensation is admissible only for the pandemic of Covid-19 and it would remain in force from April 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020 subject to review thereafter,said a government release later. “The ex-gratia would be applicable to all categories of regular employees of the state government, who die in harness due to Covid-19 disease contracted while performing official duties. “The ex-gratia would be admissible to all employees covered under the old pension scheme and those recruited on and after 1 January, 2004 and covered under the New Pension Scheme (NPS),” said a government release.

Two persons died due to coronavirus and 106 more people tested positive for the infection in Rajasthan on Sunday, bringing the tally to 3,814 in the state and the death toll to 108, PTI quotes officials as saying. The deaths were reported from Jaipur and Banswara, they said. Of the fresh cases, 30 are from Udaipur, 23 from Jaipur, 17 from Kota, 11 from Jodhpur, nine from Ajmer, four from Tonk, three from Nagaur, two each from Pali and Baran, and one each from Bikaner, Dungarpur, Jalore, Rajsamand and Sirohi, according to an official. The cumulative number of positive cases in the state now stands at 3,814. Jaipur accounts for more than half deaths (57) and maximum positive COVID-19 cases (1,219) in the state.

A medical staff of the country’s elite counterterrorism force, the National Security Guard (NSG), has tested coronavirus positive, PTI quotes officials as saying. This is the first case of COVID-19 infection in the commando force that was raised in 1984 to render specialist counterterrorism, anti-hijack and hostage rescue responsibilities.
Officials said the 33-year-old personnel is not in combat ranks of the ‘black cat’ commandos force and was posted at the NSG hospital at its garrison in Gurgaon’s Manesar. He was sent on attendant duty to look after a patient who has been admitted to a city hospital for some ailment, a senior official said. On his return to the NSG base, the jawan was sent on two-week quarantine and during this time he developed flu-like symptoms. The personnel has now been admitted to the referral hospital of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in Greater Noida, he said. The personnel is stable with mild symptoms, he said.

Over two dozen staff members of a private nursing home here have been quarantined after a doctor couple working at the facility tested positive for COVID-19, PTI quotes a senior official as saying The test reports came late in the evening on Saturday, following which the staff members of the Kosikalan-based nursing home were sent to the Krishna Kutir quarantine centre here, District Magistrate Sarvagya Ram Mishra said. “The doctor couple has been admitted to K D Medical College for treatment,” Mishra said. The Arya Nagar area of Kosikalan, where the nursing home is located, has been sealed, the DM said. The official further said a door-to-door survey by employees of the Health Department has started.

The COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat jumped to 5,818 after 278 people tested positive for the infection on Sunday alone, an official of the state health department said. Of the 21 coronavirus patients who died in the state on Sunday, 18 were from Ahmedabad district, the official said. With this, the death toll in the district has gone up to 381. A total of 266 patients were discharged from Ahmedabadcity hospitals on Sunday, taking the number of recovered patients in the district to 1,373, the official said.

In view of the safety of villagers, the passengers will be not allowed to return to their village on arrival. Instead they will be quarantined for 14 days outside the village.

Bangladesh has reported 14 more deaths due to coronavirus and registered a record 887 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 14,657, officials said on Sunday. “Fourteen more COVID-19 patients died in the last 24 hours, increasing the death toll from the pandemic to 228,” Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General Nasima Sultana said. Addressing a virtual press conference, she said the tally of coronavirus infections climbed to 14,657 after 887 new COVID-19 cases were detected, marking the biggest spike in a 24-hour count. She said the fresh cases were detected after examining 5,738 samples at 36 authorized laboratories across the country during the period. Sultana, however, said the recovery count rose to 2,650 in the last 24 hours after 236 patients were discharged from hospitals.

Even as Indore in Madhya Pradesh continues to be among the country’s most worrisome coronavirus hotpots, a city some 54 kilometres from here, Ujjain, is making health officials uneasy as the latter’s death rate from the infection as on Sunday stood at a whopping 19 per cent, far higher than the 3.35 per cent national average. Ujjain, famous for the Mahakal Temple and a city with seven lakh inhabitants, has seen 45 of 237 COVID-19 patients succumbing to the infection, the death rate being a shade below 19 per cent at 18.9 per cent, as per official data. Among those who have died are a police inspector and a BJP corporator, leading to major political parties pointing out to the city’s creaky health infrastructure, and the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government responding by shunting out the district collector and the superintendent of police.

As many as 334 coronavirus ‘super-spreaders’ have been found in Ahmedabad so far, and it is the main reason for the order to keep shops of groceries and vegetables closed till 15 May, PTI quotes officials as saying. ‘Super-spreaders’ are the infectious disease carriers who could transmit the pathogen to a large number of people. They could be vegetable vendors, grocery and milk shop owners, petrol pump attendants or garbage collectors, who by the nature of their job carry the risk of getting infected and infecting others.
Till Saturday, Gujarat reported 7,797 coronavirus positive cases and 472 deaths. Of these, Ahmedabad alone has reported 5,540 cases and 363 deaths.

A total of 7,740 dedicated COVID-19 facilities in 483 districts have been identified, the Union health ministry said on Sunday, asserting that adequate health infrastructure is in place to fight the pandemic. The public health facilities dedicated to COVID-19 management are categorised into three categories — Dedicated COVID Hospital (DCH), Dedicated COVID Health Centre (DCHC) and Dedicated COVID Care Centre (DCCC).

A technician and a tow-tug operator/ driver working with the Air India Engineering Services Ltd ( AIESL) have also tested positive for coronavirus, PTI quotes sources as saying. These employees were working at the aircraft hangar of a non-schedule operator at the Mumbai airport. They were found to be infected during tests done on 7 May, they added.
Regarding two staff of AIESL testing positive for coronavirus, the non-scheduled operator had informed the company in a recent e-mail. As per the e-mail, seen by PTI, the operator said that outsourced MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) personnel attending its aircraft are also tested for coronavirus infection. “AIESL personnel are also being tested in a phased manner. The results of tests conducted on May 7 have been received and two AIESL personnel have tested COVID-19 positive,” the engineering head of the operator said in the e-mail to AIESL CEO.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament, which normally begins in the last week of June or in the first week of July, may still be held on time, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Sunday, amid concerns that the coronavirus pandemic may delay its start. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said 75 per cent of COVID-19 cases in the city are asymptomatic or showing mild symptoms, and asserted the number of serious patients and deaths caused by the infection is “less”. “The number of serious patients is less. Rajasthan reported one more coronavirus death on Sunday morning as the number of people testing positive for the infection rose to 3,741 with 33 fresh cases. The death reported from Jaipur took the total number of fatalities in the state to 107.
Of the new 33 cases, 10 are from Jaipur, nine each from Udaipur and Kota, two each from Ajmer and Pali and one from Dungarpur. With this, the total number of positive cases in the state has gone up to 3,741, according to an official.
Jaipur accounts for more than half deaths (57) and maximum positive cases (1,206). As of now, there are 1,458 active cases in the state.

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has made arrangements to quarantine non- resident citizens arriving in Mangaluru by flights from various countries amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Nearly 1,000 rooms at lodges, hostels and service apartments have been kept ready as quarantine facilities for the NRIs.

A special train carrying 1,140 migrant workers stranded in the lockdown has left Mangaluru railway station for Jharkhand.
Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Vedavyas Kamath, MLA, were present at the railway station on Saturday night when the train left.
Kamath said the workers who had registered on the state governments Seva Sindhu portal were brought to the railway station in Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses.

Five migrant labourers died and 11 others were injured in Madhya Pradesh late on Saturday after the truck they were travelling in overturned in a village, around 200 km away from Bhopal, reports ANI.
“The truck that was carrying 15 migrants had on it 18 people in total. It was travelling to Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Five people have died till now, while 2 out of the 13 are critically injured and are being treated at Jabalpur Medical college right now,” Narsinghpur collector Deepak Saxena told News18.
“A total of 18 people were in the truck laden with mangoes,” Saxena added. “When the truck overturned near Patha village in Narsinghpur, five labourers died and 11 got injured.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk threatened Saturday to pull the company’s factory and headquarters out of California in an escalating spat with local officials who have stopped the company from reopening its electric vehicle factory.
On Twitter, Musk also threatened to sue over Alameda County Health Department coronavirus restrictions that have stopped Tesla from restarting production its factory in Fremont south of San Francisco.
Musk has been ranting about the stay-home order since the company’s 29 April first-quarter earnings were released, calling the restrictions fascist and urging governments to stop taking people’s freedom.

The West Bengal Health Department on Saturday formed teams to support surveillance and monitoring of treatment at five hospitals treating COVID-19 patients in the city. The team members will pay regular visits to these hospitals and send reports to the department, the state government said in an order.

US regulators have approved a new type of coronavirus test that administration officials have promoted as a key to opening up the country, reports The Associated Press.
The Food and Drug Administration on Saturday announced emergency authorization for antigen tests developed by Quidel Corporation of San Diego. The test can rapidly detect fragments of virus proteins in samples collected from swabs swiped inside the nasal cavity, the FDA said in a statement.
The antigen test is the third type of test to be authorized by the FDA.

Doctors at the government-run ESIC Hospital here committed a “mistake” by not testing samples of a 16-year-old girl, who later died of Covid-19, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.

A teacher of a civic body-run school, who was involved in distributing ration during the lockdown, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said on Saturday. The teacher was posted at a primary school in Wazirabad under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
The teacher had last come to school on April 28 and started showing COVID-19 symptoms from 2 May. His test report came on Friday, an official of North Delhi Municipal Corporation said.
“We traced his six primary contacts and they have been sent into quarantine. Since they are completely asymptomatic, no test has been done yet,” he said, adding the school building has been sanitised.

Pakistan on Saturday began easing the month-long lockdown despite a steady rise in the number of coronavirus cases which has now crossed the 28,000-mark with 618 deaths.
Doctors have warned against easing restrictions. The Representative of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has demanded that the government observe World Health Organisation protocols and implement strict lockdown.
“We think the number will definitely spike. According to our information, there are five hospitals in Karachi that have a total of 63 beds reserved for coronavirus patients. If this is the condition in a city like Karachi, then you can imagine what it is like in other cities of Pakistan,” said Dr Ikram Tunio of the PMA in a press conference in Karachi.

The first batch of 326 Indian nationals stranded in the UK due to the coronavirus-linked global travel restrictions arrived here from London early on Sunday morning.
The special evacuation flight AI 130, a Boeing 777 plane which departed from London on Saturday, landed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) at around 1.30 AM with 326 Indians, according to a source.
The airport authorities, in a statement on Saturday, said that the arriving passengers with symptoms will be moved to isolation centres.
Asymptomatic passengers residing in Mumbai will be moved to quarantine facilities like hotels, while those from outside of the city will be transported by the state to their respective district headquarters, it said

As many as 62 more personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been infected with coronavirus on Saturday.
“With 62 new COVID-19 cases, the total number of coronavirus cases reported from CRPF is 234, of which 231 are active cases,” according to an official statement issued by the CRPF.
Meanwhile, 35 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday, taking the total count of cases in the force over 250.

An Air India flight with 163 Indians landed at the Hyderabad international airport from Kuwait on Saturday night as part of the government’s Vande Bharat Mission to bring home Indian nationals stranded abroad, airport sources said. The AI flight 988 landed at the airport shortly after 10 pm, the sources said.
To facilitate the arriving passengers and aircraft crew, the Hyderabad International Airport has kept the international arrivals and the stretch right from the aerobridge to the arrivals ramp fully sanitized and fumigated, the sources said.

Around 224 Indians stranded in the US due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown boarded the first repatriation flight from San Francisco to Mumbai and Hyderabad on Saturday.
In the first phase of the US-India segment of the ‘Operation Vande Bharat- A homecoming’, flights have been planned from San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Washington DC to New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Bengaluru.
As many as 1,961 Indians are likely to be repatriated through seven flights from the four cities in the first phase, officials said.

The nationwide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 59,662 on Saturday and the death toll rose to 1,981 with the country registering an increase of 95 deaths and 3,320 cases in 24 hours till Saturday morning, the Union Health Ministry said even as fresh infections among central armed police forces, and the repatriated Indians raised new concerns among experts.
The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 39,834, while 17,846 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, the Union Health Ministry said.
