Coronavirus LATEST News Updates: Following the Centre’s decision to cancel class 12 CBSE board exams in view of the Covid pandemic, several states including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand called off their board exams on Wednesday while few others said they will take a call soon. Mumbai on Wednesday reported less than 1,000 fresh coronavirus cases for the third consecutive day while 1,632 patients were discharged As many as 594 doctors have died due to COVID-19 in the ongoing second wave with Delhi recording the maximum 107 fatalities, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has said. According to the IMA, 748 doctors died of the infection across the country in the first wave of the pandemic. Delhi recorded 576 fresh COVID-19 cases at a positivity rate of 0.78 per cent and 103 more fatalities due to the disease on Wednesday. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday called the Centre’s statement that it will vaccinate all citizens before December a hoax, reports ANI. The Supreme Court on Wednesday made a prima facie observation that the Centre’s vaccination policy, which does not provide free vaccination for those in the age group of 18 to 44 years, as ‘arbitrary and irrational’, reports LiveLaw . The Supreme Court has directed asked states/UTs to file an affidavit submitting their stand on providing vaccination free of cost to its population within two weeks. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday wrote to all chief ministers on centralised procurement of vaccines by the Government of India and asked them to join hands in the fight against COVID-19. Hours after the Gujarat board announced the cancellation of Class 12 exams, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said HSC exams in the state have been scrapped. The Delhi High Court said if the Delhi government could not ensure that people will get both the doses of COVAXIN within the stipulated time, then it should not have started so many vaccination centres with “much pomp and splendour”. Minister of State (Home) G Kishan Reddy said the Centre has formulated action plans to ensure all citizens are vaccinated by December this year, mentioning that talks are on with pharma companies to produce 250 crore doses. Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board cancelled the Class 12 board examinations, ANI quoted state education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama as saying. India has reported lowest daily new cases of 1.32 lakh in 54 days, maintaining the decline in trend in the new cases. IMA said that 594 doctors died during the more infectious second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The data shared by IMA showed that as many as 107 doctors had died in Delhi during the second wave. Bihar saw the deaths of 96 doctors, while 67 died in Uttar Pradesh, 43 in Rajasthan, and 39 in Jharkhand. As India battles the second wave of COVID-19, the country has recorded 1.32 lakh daily new cases, taking the number confirmed cases so far to 2,83,07,832, as per figures updated by the health ministry at 8 am on Wednesday. While the decline in daily infections continued for the 54th day, the toll climbed to 3,35,102 with 3,207 deaths being reported in the last 24 hours. Over 21.85 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far and a consignment of 15 ventilators and 12,000 tablets of anti-viral drug Favipiravir arrived in the country from Iceland. This comes a day after India received the third and largest consignment of Sputnik V vaccines from Russia. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that there will be no Class 12 board exams this year. Both CBSE and CISCE Class 12 exams have been cancelled. The PM’s office quoted him as saying, “The health and safety of our students is of utmost importance and there will be no compromise on this aspect.” Hours after Modi’s announcement, the Karnataka government said it will too take a call on whether to conduct SSLC and II PU exams. Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Tuesday said, “We need to take a suitable decision after weighing all the options.” The Indian Medical Association stated that 594 doctors succumbed during the second wave of COVID-19.
