Things have gone downhill for Yashasvi Jaiswal since he brought up a fine century on the opening day of the first Test against England in Headingley . The opener dropped not one but three catches during England’s innings, including off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling, allowing the hosts to capitalise on the lifelines and mount a solid first innings total that nearly cancelled India’s 471 out.

And after falling cheaply in India’s second innings, getting caught-behind off Brydon Carse’s bowling on 4, Jaiswal dropped yet another catch on the final day of the series opener in Leeds. This time off Mohammed Siraj’s bowling, leaving the Hyderabadi pacer absolutely incensed.

The incident took place during the 39th over of the English innings, shortly before a shower interrupted halted their chase of the 371-run target that had been doing swimmingly so far on the final day. Siraj, who had been bowling much better lines in the second innings after proving expensive in the first, bowled a short ball at Ben Duckett, who was batting on 98.

Duckett, who had scored 62 in the first innings, got a thick top-edge while attempting to pull the short delivery, and had his heart in his mouth as he witnessed Jaiswal charge at the ball from the square-leg boundary. And while the ball did land in his hands, the 23-year-old could not complete the catch, with the ball popping out of his hands, much to the disappointment of his teammates.

It certainly wasn’t an easy chance for Jaiswal, who had to run forward and put in a slide, compared to the chances that had come his way at the slips and gully. But with absolutely nothing going their way so far on the final day, the Indians had to grab any and every chance that came their way.

No Yashasvi Jaiswal, you can't drop catches like this. Another sitter goes down. pic.twitter.com/qDSQp8iUmF

Yashasvi Jaiswal should be dropped for the next game. It’s time players are held accountable for missed catches and misfields. After all, what’s the point of scoring runs in Test cricket if we can’t take wickets?
