India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and England captain Ben Stokes had a fiery moment on Day 1 of the second Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday. The two players exchanged words during India’s first innings, with tempers flaring briefly in the middle.
The incident took place when Jaiswal was completing a run and reached the non-striker’s end. Stokes appeared to say something to the young Indian batter, to which Jaiswal quickly responded, “You don’t want to hear from me, come on.” Stokes said something again as he ended his over.
Stokes has the last laugh
Jaiswal, though, wasn’t distracted by the war of words. He stayed focused and reached his half-century in the next over, showing maturity under pressure. But Stokes would eventually have the last laugh. In the 46th over of the innings, he bowled a short and wide delivery that Jaiswal tried to cut. The ball took a thin edge and was caught by Jamie Smith behind the stumps.
Jaiswal walked back for a well-made 87 off 107 balls. The England skipper celebrated the dismissal with a lot of passion, showing how much the wicket meant to him, especially in the context of the game as England were in desperate need of a breakthrough at the time.
