India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and all-rounder Shivam Dube will be in action in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with defending champions Mumbai naming the duo in their 17-man squad announced on Friday.
The team will be led by all-rounder Shardul Thakur who is also captaining Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Ajinkya Rahane and Sarfaraz Khan are the other two big names who will be in action as Mumbai will aim to defend their Syed Mushtaq Ali title.
Why is Suryakumar Yadav not captaining Mumbai?
Suryakumar, under whose captaincy India are set to play the 2026 T20 World Cup, has not been appointed captain by Mumbai Cricket Association. This is likely because Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will clash with India’s T20I series against South Africa at home.
India will play South Africa for a five-match T20I series from December 9 to 19 while India’s premier domestic T20 competition runs from November 26 to December 18. This means both Suryakumar and Dube will not be available for later rounds.
Other notable names in Mumbai squad
The squad consists of multiple Indian Premier League regulars apart from the above-mentioned India names. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Chennai Super Kings’ Ayush Mhatre and Rajasthan Royals’ Tushar Deshpande are also in the team.
Sarfaraz’s brother Musheer has also made the cut and so has the young all-rounder Suryansh Shedge, who was the Player of the Match of last edition’s final.
Regular domestic performers like Siddhesh Lad, Hardik Tamore, Shams Mulani, Atharva Ankolekar too are in the squad.
The defending champion will begin their campaign against Railways on November 26, and will take on Vidarbha (November 28), Andhra (November 30), Assam (December 2), Kerala (December 4), Chhattisgarh (December 6) and Odisha (December 8) in the group stage.
