England pacer Brydon Carse was set for a maiden IPL season after getting bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad at his base price of Rs 1 crore in the mega auction in Jeddah. A toe injury that worsened during the Champions Trophy, however, has forced him to shelve his India plans for now.

Sunrisers Hyderabad named South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder as replacement after England pacer Brydon Carse was ruled out of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to injury. Carse had worsened a toe injury during England’s opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy against Australia and was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament, in which Jos Buttler’s men suffered a first-round exit .

Seam-bowling all-rounder Mulder was part of the South African team that reached the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy before suffering a knockout punch at the hands of New Zealand in Lahore on Wednesday. He joins the ‘Orange Army’ for Rs 75 lakh.

Toe injury forces Carse to skip maiden IPL season

Carse, who was in red-hot form during the T20I series in India that got underway in January, had been bought at his base price of Rs 1 crore by SRH in the IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in November.

The South African-born speedster had collected nine wickets against the Suryakumar Yadav-led hosts, the second-highest in the series, at an average of 14.88, and was expected to make a fiery debut in the world’s biggest T20 league a less than a couple of months later.

Carse, however, had skipped the remainder of the three-match ODI series after playing the first game in Nagpur. As for his only appearance in the Champions Trophy, Carse appeared to be in a state of discomfort caused by the issue in his toe that started as a blister.

Mulder, who is also yet to make an appearance in the IPL, had collected six wickets (average: 18.16) in the Champions Trophy including a haul of 3/25 against England in Karachi.

In his 128 T20 appearances till date, the Durban Super Giants all-rounder has scored 2,172 runs at a strike rate of 132.92 and collected 67 wickets at an average and economy of 28.97 and 8.53 respectively.

The Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad had finished runners-up last season following a defeat against the Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders in the final in Chennai.

The ‘Orange’ Army opted to retain a majority of their core group – Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy besides the captain himself.

And in the mega auction, they had acquired senior India pacer Mohammed Shami for Rs 10 crore as well as Ishan Kishan and Harshal Patel for Rs 11.25 crore and Rs 8 crore respectively.
