After a middling campaign in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where they finished sixth, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head into the 2026 season looking to rediscover the ultra-aggressive brand of cricket that made them one of the most feared batting units in 2024.
This is not a complete rebuild, but more of a recalibration. The core of the side remains strong, particularly in the batting department, but early disruptions to leadership and concerns around an inexperienced bowling attack could shape their season.
The biggest immediate challenge is the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a lumbar stress injury and is expected to be available for selection in the playing XI only around the middle phase of the tournament. In his absence, Ishan Kishan will lead the side, marking his first stint as an IPL captain.

How SRH will navigate this transitional phase, both tactically and mentally, could define their campaign.
Meanwhile, much like several other teams this season, SRH too had been hit by an injury setback ahead of IPL 2026, with Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards getting ruled out. The management moved quickly to replace him, bringing in England left-arm seamer David Payne.

Tactical identity
SRH are clearly built around their aggressive batting line-up. They like to attack from the start and keep the pressure on throughout the innings. They have enough power in the lineup to continue this approach even in the middle-overs. The concern is whether their bowling can support this style, especially in the early part of the season without Cummins.

At the moment, this looks like a team that will try to outscore opponents rather than control games with the ball.
Batting approach
This is SRH’s biggest strength. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head form a very dangerous opening pair. Both like to play attacking shots and can put teams under pressure in the powerplay. Kishan at No. 3 adds more intent and his recent form will come handy. He comes in with confidence and now has the added responsibility of leading the side.
In the middle-order, Heinrich Klaasen remains a key player, especially against spin. Nitish Kumar Reddy adds balance, while Liam Livingstone, for whom SRH spent 13 crores in the last auction, brings extra power and flexibility in this line-up.
Overall, this is a batting lineup that can score big runs consistently.
Bowling strategy
Bowling is clearly the area where SRH have questions. Without Cummins at the start, they lose their lead fast bowler and on-field leader, which puts added pressure on the rest of the attack. In his absence, Brydon Carse, Eshan Malinga and David Payne are useful options, but neither has established themselves as consistent match-winners in the IPL yet.
Amongst the Indian bowlers, experienced Harshal Patel will have a key role, particularly at the death. Jaydev Unadkat offers control, while Shivam Mavi brings pace but needs to stay fit through the season.
The spin department looks a bit thin as well, with options like Zeeshan Ansari and Harsh Dubey lacking experience at this level. Kamindu Mendis is an interesting spin-bowling all-round option, but fitting him into the XI could be tricky. As a result, SRH may have to rely on Livingstone to contribute a few overs of spin.
Captaincy and approach
Kishan’s leadership will be under scrutiny. A strong IPL season could even bring him into the wider conversation around India’s T20I leadership plans. His recent record with Jharkhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has been impressive, with the state winning its maiden title.
This is his first stint as an IPL captain, and he will need to balance his own batting with the demands of leadership. Decision-making on the field and effective use of resources will be key areas to watch.
Abhishek has been named vice-captain, but both are still relatively new to leadership roles. Once Cummins returns, the structure should feel more settled. Until then, the early phase of the tournament will be a real test for this leadership group. However, Cummins’ presence in the dug-out will certainly be a huge help for someone like Kishan.
Strengths
SRH’s biggest strength is their batting. They have players who can change the game quickly. The top order is explosive, and the middle order has power and flexibility. The addition of Livingstone makes the batting even stronger. They also have decent batting depth, which will suit their high-risk high-reward approach.
Weaknesses
The bowling attack lacks experience, especially without Cummins in the first half of the season. There is also no clear strike bowler apart from him. That could make it difficult to control games. Leadership is another unknown factor. With a new captain, there could be some inconsistency in decision making.
Possible Threats
Injuries are already a concern and more setbacks could hurt their balance. SRH also depend a lot on their top order. If Head, Sharma and Kishan do not score runs regularly, the middle order could come under pressure. Their bowling might struggle to defend totals if things do not go their way. Hence toss will be a key factor for them throughout this season.
