India struggled briefly but got there in the end to beat England by five wickets in the fourth Test in Ranchi on Monday to clinch the five-match series 3-1. It saw India extend their unbeaten run in home Test series . The last team to beat India in India was Alastair Cook’s England in 2012.
England had started the series well with a win in Hyderabad but have now suffered three consecutive defeats in Visakhapatnam, Rajkot and Ranchi. The series moved to Dharamsala now for the fifth and final match - albeit a dead rubber now.
In Ranchi, asked to chase 192 runs, India slipped to 120/5 but Shubman Gill (52) and Dhruv Jurel (39) staged a patient 72-run stand to guide their side to victory during the second session of the fourth day.
After a 434 run hammering in Rajkot, England made a match of this but were undone by India’s spin trio of R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja on Sunday. Equally crucial for the hosts was the stand between Jurel and Kuldeep that saw England take a 46-run lead instead of 100-plus as it appeared at one point.
This is England’s first series defeat under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum and the famed ‘Bazball’ era. It is also the first time they have lost three Tests in succession.
