'I am hurt': Mohammed Shami on Mitchell Marsh's World Cup trophy celebration

Mohammed Shami said he was hurt to see the way Australia’s Mitchell Marsh celebrated the World Cup win in the dressing room. The Aussie allrounder was pictured with his feet up on a table and the trophy in between as he sat comfortably on a sofa. Australia had beaten India by a comfortably six-wicket margin, with 42 balls to spare, to win the World Cup on Sunday. Marsh didn’t quite play a crucial role in the final but Travis Head did by scoring 137 runs from 120 balls to be adjudged as the Player of the Match. In the dressing room, Australian players celebrated, including Marsh, with the photo going viral from Pat Cummins’ Instagram account. Responding to the image, India seamer Shami said at his home in Amroha, “I am hurt.” “The trophy for which all the teams in the world fight, the trophy which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy.” Shami ended the World Cup with 24 wickets, including a record three five-wicket hauls. Marsh, who scored 441 runs in the tournament, tried to downplay the celebration upon landing in Melbourne earlier this week. “It’s got a bit of legs that photo, hasn’t it?” he joked. “Pardon the pun.” The all-rounder said he wasn’t aware of the backlash that photo generated. “Am I? I haven’t seen a lot, but there you go,” he said. Marsh is not part of Australia’s squad that has remained in India for the T20I series. Next assignment for him is the Test series at home against Pakistan.
