World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma surpasses Chris Gayle's record for most sixes in tournament history

India captain Rohit Sharma was at his aggressive best during the 2023 Cricket World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday, playing a quickfire knock of 47 off 29 balls. World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table Rohit amassed four fours and as many sixes, and with those four maximums Rohit surpassed Chris Gayle for most number of sixes in World Cup history.

Gayle finished his ODI career with 49 sixes in World Cups, and Rohit broke that by slamming his 50th six in World Cups when he pulled a Trent Boult short ball over deep backward square for a maximum. This was not the only record Rohit broke on Wednesday. He surpassed Gayle again for most sixes in a single World Cup edition. Gayle had amassed 26 sixes in the 2015 World Cup, and so far in this edition, Rohit has amassed 28 maximums. Rohit helped India cross the 50-run mark in just 32 deliveries, and was looking in good touch. However, the 36-year-old missed out on his half-century after he was caught by New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson at mid-off,  off Tim Southee’s bowling. India have not won the 50-pver World Cup since 2011, when they lifted the trophy at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. At the time of writing this report, India were 220/1 in 30.4 overs, with Virat Kohli (70*) and Shreyas Iyer (20*) unbeaten.
