India’s 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end on Monday after New Zealand got the better of Pakistan in the final Group A match in Dubai. India needed Pakistan to them a favour and beat the Kiwis to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, but that wasn’t meant to be. Australia (eight points) qualified as Group A toppers, whereas New Zealand (Six points) go through as group runners-up. India finished third in the group with four points.

India began with a 58-run loss to New Zealand in their first match, before beating Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their next two games. An 82-run win over Sri Lanka boosted the Women in Blue’s chances of advancing as their Net Run Rate (NRR) was in the positive.

A win against Australia in their final group stage match would have given India a strong chance to qualify for the last-four. However, an unbeaten half-century from skipper Harmanpeet was not enough for India to chase down 152 as a majority of India’s batters failed to step up. The last time India fell short of the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals was during the 2016 at home.
