Bangladesh responded to Sri Lanka’s ‘Timed Out’ celebration with a bit of trolling of their own after pulling off a 2-1 series victory with a four-wicket win in the third ODI on Monday.

The Sri Lankans had trolled the Bangladeshis by pointing at their wrists while celebrating their series victory in the T20I leg of the tour by a similar scoreline. The celebrations in Sylhet had sparked quite the meme-fest on social media although Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto didn’t appear too impressed.

The celebration rekindled memories of Angelo Mathews’ infamous ‘Timed Out’ dismissal in their ICC World Cup meeting in Delhi in November. The senior Sri Lankan all-rounder was dismissed in a bizarre manner after failing to take strike for his first delivery on time due to a broken strap on his helmet that he found out only after he had made his way to the centre.

Then-Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan had appealed for the dismissal after noticing Mathews taking too long to get ready for the first delivery of his innings, and refused to withdraw his appeal after the on-field umpires ruled in favour of the fielding team.

The incident caused a massive uproar in the Sri Lankan dressing room, further intensifying their rivalry with the Bangladeshis, and sparked a debate over the laws of the game as well as on sportsmanship and whether Shakib should have given Mathews a warning before appealing.

Before his antics with the helmet, Mushfiqur had struck an unbeaten 37 off 36 deliveries, playing second fiddle in an unbroken 59-run partnership with Rishad Hossain, whose 48 not out off just 18 deliveries helped the Bangladeshis chase the 236-run target down with nearly 10 overs to spare. This was after opener Tanzid Hasan set the tone for the chase with an 81-ball 84.

Sri Lanka could only manage 235 on the board after opting to bat despite an unbeaten ton from all-rounder Janith Liyanage (101 not out).
