Watch: Deepti Sharma run-out sparks old controversy as India beat England in thriller

On a day when India women’s cricket team celebrated Julan Goswami, Deepti Sharma handed England a bitter defeat on Saturday as the spinner ran out a set Charlie Dean, at the nonstriker’s end — previously known as Mankading — for the hosts’ 10th wicket to seal the match.

The wicket gave India a 16-run win over the hosts as England were bundled out for 153 in 43.3 overs while chasing a modest total of 170. The incident happened at a key moment of the match, which was set up for Jhulan Goswami’s grand finale by the retiring pacer herself with a wicket and a maiden in her last international over. However, with England needing 17 runs off 39 balls, a fighting knock from Charlie Dean (47 off 80) came to an abrupt end by Deepti Sharma, who ran out or ‘Mankaded’ the batter while bowling the fourth delivery of the over. Umpire momentarily signalled it a dead ball but after a discussion with Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur confirmed that Indians are appealing for a run out. The on-field officials asked the third umpire for a confirmation on the appeal and it didn’t take the latter much longer to flash ‘Out!’ on the big screen. While the incident is expected to cause a huge uproar, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, ICC rules, in effect from 1 October, reads that ‘Mankading’ be referred to as simply a run-out.
